The Fourth Owners: The Hoffman’s The following year on September 14, 1973, Alvah Burlingame
3rd and his sister, Madeline Burlingame Schier Nelson sold the Heights house
and the adjacent lot to Lily and Joel Hoffman in whose hands the property
remains in 2003.
The Hoffmans (he is a psychiatrist; she a sociologist)
rented the Drum house--only a few doors away--during the summer of 1972.
However, they never knew what lay down the driveway at 10 Bay Avenue
because of the overgrowth of trees and shrubs. The original
1908 vision of house and landscape is today the same spectacular view of
the Bay from nearly every window and porch of the house.
![]() The house quickly became the center of family life for
this New York City couple with two young children, and remains so today,
used and enjoyed by their children, Margaret, a physician, and Jared, president
of the Knitting Factory, along with their respective spouses and children.
